What Does Going Self-Employed Have to Do with Your Personal and Spiritual Evolution? (Part 1)
Looking back, I now don’t think it was sheer coincidence that my move from working for a Human Resource Consultancy to Freelance Consultant came at a time I was extensively exploring who I was and want I wanted in life. At the time (around 1997) friends joked that whatever personal development workshop they’d just heard of, I’d already attended!
I believe each of us is on a quest. In the same way our cells know to grow, a caterpillar goes into its cocoon and the flower responds to the sunlight, we have an innate desire to explore who we are, why we are here how we can express unique selves more fully in the world.
This process is always present but it might get uncomfortable from time to time so we can distract ourselves, avoid the urges for expansion and act on our fears until either we feel ready or, more likely, the discomfort of our current situation propels us forward.
When we are employed, especially when we work for a large corporation, everything we do is within the limits imposed on us. We might work for an employer that is interested in us developing our skills, provides us with some flexible hours or encourages us to implement our ideas but, sooner or later we will come up against some limitation that means what we feel deeply is next for us is at odds with our employment.
At this point we may look for a different employer or begin the weigh up this desire to follow our path against our regular pay and perceived security. It used to be that employees were protected from risk but I’m afraid this might be more of an illusion of protection rather than a reality now. Actually employees can be legally responsible, zero hours contracts are unpredictable and redundancy is common. Employers, and society in general, are very good at feeding our fears to keep us employed.
Is Self- Employment always wonderful? Of course not! (More about this is part 2). However, the quest we are on requires our freedom to create our own lifestyle, set our own hours and to express our unique selves. Once we have that urge to move on, all the trappings of employment are just a distraction keeping us from who we are wanting to be.
