Planting Seeds and Bulbs
I love the analogy that in our work and our lives we are planting seeds and bulbs.
Whether we are recommending a book to a friend, smiling at someone in the street or having a sales conversation, we are planting ideas.
Some may react straight away. The friend is inspired, the person smiles back & we gain a new client.
Others are more like bulbs, they take a while and eventually, perhaps when we have almost forgotten they were there, they spring up and bloom.
The rest we assume have ‘fallen on deaf ears’ but often we don’t actually know. We may have had an impact we know nothing about.
I have written off some conversations I later find had life transforming effects!
Like the bird that eats the seed in order to deliver it to a place it is more likely to thrive, we never know what will become of the idea seeds we are planting.
We also have ideas seeds that are in our care. We nurture and develop them until they are ready for us to share with others. Until they are strong enough to stand up to questioning.
As gardeners we know where our responsibilities begin and end. We do our best with planting and nurturing and then we give space for nature to do her thing. We play our part in the process and enjoy the flowers as and when they bloom. Perhaps that gives us the illusion that we are in control, that we have created those results? But there’s something magical in realising as Michael Neill says…
“How things ultimately turn out isn't up to us. It never was. But if do our bit and play our part, it's remarkable how far we can go.”
