Do You Need a Holiday?
When we talk about building the Self Employed lifestyle of our dreams, it is often said that we would be enjoying life so much, we would not need to take a vacation.
When we are employed in work we no longer enjoy, we tend to compensate and reward ourselves with fabulous holidays and treats. We often get sick when our body unwinds from the pressure and then we have to fit ourselves back into our restricted life on our return. So the pleasure is short lived!
We get stuck when we invest all our time and energy in work that is unfulfilling, we compensate ourselves with expensive treats and then the cost of our lifestyle convinces us that we can not leave our source of regular income.
On the other hand, Self Employment offers the opportunity to create a life that fully engages our passions, work we love doing and people we enjoy collaborating with and serving. We are expressing our gifts fully in the world, making our unique impact and building our legacy and that feels good!
Many people get so involved in their new lifestyle that the line between business and personal life becomes blurred and they rarely 'switch off' from work. This is not helped by our 24/7 technology and our desire for success.
If it is going well, we feel too busy to leave
If it is going badly, we do not feel we can justify time off.
But we still need a holiday! We still need to have work hours and time off so we can re-charge our energy and return to work with fresh ideas and enthusiasm. In this context, holidays are great for different perspectives, complete relaxation and nurturing the relationships that support us. We are more likely to discover new inspiration when we are relaxed, we can see the big picture when we are not in our business and we can engage even more fully with our work on our return.
We may need to be more creative about the type of holiday we take to fit with our timing and budget. We might need to choose a business model that enables us to take time out or have someone to cover for us. It will probably take some advance planning, consider this a necessary investment.
