A New Hairdo

A New Hairdo

My mother talks about working in a stuffy office in the 1960s and meeting an Australian woman who shook up her life with new ideas and different perspectives.  Mum adopted a new hair style that shocked her co-workers and her supervisor warned her about being influenced by such a rebel.  Mum's new hairdo marked her becoming more daring in her self-expression.

We have life events that we mark with ceremonies and parties with friends and family but sometimes the shift is quite subtle.  We have a new insight about life, we overcome some internal obstacle, our bodies heal or we are starting a new phase.  The change in us might feel quite huge but on the outside nothing has changed, other than perhaps an extra twinkle in our eye.

We often have trouble explaining these internal shifts, putting the feeling into words is a challenge!  When people describe spiritual experiences they can sound quite crazy and sometimes our inner knowing is more the thud of 'of course' rather than the 'hallelujah' or 'aha' we might be expecting.

We might not want to explain the changes to everyone in our life, perhaps we're not quite sure of all the details or the implications or if the new feeling will last but on the other hand we want to honour the significance this newness has for us.

The new tattoo, outfit or hair style can be seen as the first sign we give the outside that more changes are on their way.  Let's not underestimate this way of updating who we are and what we're about.  Let's celebrate all our progress big and small and keep reminding ourselves who we are committed to being.

If you've experienced an internal shift and marked that in some way, I'd love to hear about it in the comments section below...
